Large collection of paper items and objects (total of 1318 items) related to El Al Airlines. El Al Israel Airlines Ltd was officially established in 1949, although its maiden flight already took place in September 1948, while transporting President Chaim Weizmann from Geneva to Eretz Israel. Between 1950-1956, the company transported over 160,000 immigrants from Yemen, Iran and India in Operation "Magic Carpet" and in Operation "Ezra and Nechemiah". In June 1961 the company made its first direct flight from Tel Aviv to New York in a Boeing 707 without a stopover, thereby establishing a world record for the longest direct commercial flight. The history of El Al Airlines is integrally related to the history of the State of Israel and its development reflects the development of the State from its foundation until today, in the major immigration operations, in its flights awarded diplomatic and political prominence and in it constituting the national airline company, whose development correlates with the development of the State. El Al Airlines accompanied several prominent historical events throughout the history of the State, including: first flight to Cairo (1980); first historical flight to Moscow (January 1990); transporting a record number of 1087 passengers in a Boeing 747 – immigrants from Addis Ababa – as part of Operation Solomon in which Jews of Ethiopia were transported to Eretz Israel (May 1991); first flight to Amman (June 1996); in 2001, following September 11 attacks, El Al was the first airline company which was granted permission to fly within the United States (two days prior to other airline companies). Between 2003-2005 the company underwent privatization. This collection includes: ~ Hundreds of paper items: postcards, airline tickets, various advertisement brochures, menus, beer cup saucers, stamps and napkins; album (apparently of a travel agent) containing price lists for El Al flights; special advertisements from the 1950’s, calendars, original photographs, receipts and various documents; internal booklets and advertisements of the company – instruction booklets for new employees and for staff members, guidance booklets for pilots, reference books for pilot, and many other paper items. ~ Hundreds of objects which reflect the history of design, branding and advertisement of El Al airplanes throughout years of its operation: clocks; glass, plastic and porcelain kitchen and service dishes (some produced by well-known companies in Germany); Menorahs, ashtrays, key chains, faux ancient coins and archaeological items; small bottles of wine, card and domino games, models of buses and airplanes, pilot and flight attendant badges, pilot and flight attendant cases as well as gift bags; “souvenirs” which were given to travellers for advertisement purposes – pens, emblems, key chains, and more; original impressions for imprint of symbols of “El Al”, special stamps for stamping of airline tickets (with clock), aircrew ties and cap, large hand-ornamented bowls, and many other items. Total of 1318 items. Various sizes and conditions. List available upon request. To the best of our knowledge this is the largest collection of its kind ever auctioned.
