Title: Collection of pictures of old and new paper-making for handmade paper with one hundred specimens of actual handmade paper Author: Seki, Yoshikuni Place: [Tokyo] Publisher: Date: [1959] Description: 16, 258 pp. Illustrated with 100 tipped-in actual samples of hand-made Japanese paper, many from the 14th to 17th centuries, some of which have hand-written Japanese text; plus other illustrations within the text from paintings, engravings, and other reproductions, 7 of which are on mounted plates. 8vo. Brown-orange cloth, lettered in gilt, slipcase. First Edition. Instructional and historical treatise on Japanese paper making done by various master crafts people, mostly by women. The last page in the book contains a statement that the book was originally not intended for sale. "A considerable number of the pictures are descriptive portraits of paper-making in each district and corresponding sample papers were selected...Each paper has its own character. Nowadays, however, many of these papers are no longer made and people are apt to forget their names" for which the author has "added one hundred kinds of handmade paper at the end of the book as reference" - from author preface.
