This reference is among the first books to explore and illustrate examples of photography's earliest years. It categorizes photography's varied forms and describes its literature and early achievements in the art field. There are more than 300 illustrations, most from major private collections, largely the works of noted American and European photographers, which have been selected primarily to show the development of photographic processes.
