COLOR PLATE] CASSIN, JOHN, Illustrations of the Birds of California, Texas, Oregon, British and Russian America . Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co., [1853]-1856. First edition, with the 1869 ownership signature of family member Charles Cassin (see below). Modern cloth, gilt lettered on spine as "Cassin's Birds of America". 10 1/4 x 6 3/4 (25 1/2 x 17 cm); 50 hand-colored lithographed plates after Cassin by Wm. E. Hitchcock, printed and colored by J.T. Bowen. Two plates repaired in margin, other light spotting to some plates but generally clean, text foxed and dampstained at rear, cloth rubbed, sold as is; Together with an 1869 document signed by president U.S. Grant, appointing Charles Cassin as an Assistant Surgeon in the Navy. Provenance: By descent in the Cassin Family. C
