Beschreibung:

COLOR PLATE] GIRAUD, [JANE ELIZABETH]. The Flowers of Shakespeare . [London]: [Day & Hague for Ackerman], [1845]. First edition. Original cloth, publisher's binding of green cloth blocked in blind, titled in gold. 12 1/8 inches (31 cm). Title (followed by dedication leaf) and twenty-nine plates all hand-colored over lithographic outline, each plate protected by tissue guards, all edges gilt. Slight fading to front cover, overall an unusually nice copy. * Victorian manuscript with the same title, deriving somewhat from Mrs. Giraud's work (but larger in format, and with substantially more quotations and depictions of flowers). Title and about forty rather fine floral watercolors, with Shakespearian quotations written in a "Gothic" script at the foot of each page, as in the source work. Tear to head of the spine, wear to binding, sound internally. The publisher and date of Mrs. Giraud's work are as indicated by Lowndes' Bibliographer's Manual of English Literature. Provenance: Collection of Lincoln Kirstein
