Framed display 17 x 21 in. with frame, containing a piece of oak timber from Perry's flagship, US Brig Niagara. Includes short statement with Oliver Perry's victory message; an 1813 Liberty head penny; the last page of a letter written and signed by Perry (5 x 6.25 in.), only "Friday, April 11" indicated below signature, possibly 1806; and a short newspaper clipping outlining the aid given to Perry by William Henry Harrison in the capture of the British fleet, and the aid given Harrison by Perry in the capture of the British Army. There is also a painting of Perry by "Tom Ramsay, '76." In addition the lot includes two portions of The Weekly Register, Baltimore, MD: section from Saturday, March 27, 1813, pp. 59-60, 63-72. Much news of the war, including a report sent to Cincinnati of Indians gathering at Kaskaskia, IL, American and British vessels, American prizes (captured vessels), and more; and Saturday, December 18, 1813, pp. 257-20. Both with assorted "events of the war." Real photo postcard with the flagship, Niagara, 1813 - 1913. Most ships from the War of 1812 were sunk on Presque Isle in 1820. The Niagara was raised in 1913 and rebuilt for the centennial of the Battle of Lake Erie. This postcard commemorates that celebration. She underwent more restoration between 1930 and 1963, then extensive restoration in 1988. So much of the original ship has been replaced that some consider the vessel still sailing the Great Lakes as a replica. Clearly during these restorations relics were sold as souvenirs, likely to fund some of the work. Condition: Overall very good, but each piece has its own issues - newsprint is very toned (both Weekly Registers and the one in the display), wood is rough, which is certainly the reason it was replaced, penny is worn but readable, postcard is very good.
