COMMONPLACE BOOK -- A manuscript notebook of over 200pp., 4°, containing topical and humorous verse, popular ballads and songs in various hands from the late 17th- to early 18th-century, ranging, for example, from two poems 'Writ Over a Chimney Piece in Worcestershire,' extolling the virtues of a model wife and husband, to 'Epitaph on Mrs Oldfield made & told about town a few days after she was buried in Westminster Abbey', dated 1730, which begins: 'The Whore of Manwaring lyes here The W-- of Valiant Brigadier The W-- of Wilkes and all the town Whose price was once nor half a crown', contemporary vellum (spine rubbed and darkened); and 2 other manuscript notebooks. PROVENANCE: 'W.J. Thoms Bought at his sale 1887'; H. Phillipps (inscriptions on front pastedown). (3)
