Company School, 19th century Camellia reticulata White Camellia unsigned, watercolour and bodycolour, watermark 'J. Whatman 1816', mounted onto card (slight paint loss to three leaves) 17¾ x 12.7/8 inches (450 x 327mm.) Provenance : Robert de Belder (sale 27 April 1987 Sotheby's lot 75 [part lot]). A fine quality work from an unfortunatley anonymous artist. The composition has been carefully thought out and allows the artist to show all aspects of the subject. The technique of outlining the blooms with a light grey wash, which is used so effectively here, is more usually found in Chinese school drawings.
