London, 1579]. 2°(415 x 275mm.). 32 double-page engraved maps of England and Wales only (of 35), with full contemporary hand-colouring, on guards throughout, numbered to 32 in a contemporary hand, bunch of grapes watermark, an additional hand-coloured double-page armorial plate by Jodocus Hondius titled The Union of the Roses of the families of Lancastre and Yorke..unto this day 1589 , bound in (some minor staining, 7 maps trimmed with severe loss and restored [Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Hertfordshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Denbigh and Radnor], 4 maps trimmed at outer margins and restored [Westmorland, Norfolk, Suffolk and Devon], without the frontispiece portrait, plate of arms and index of maps as issued in the atlas, Union of the Roses plate restored). cf. A collection of 26 double-page engraved maps of the World, Continents and Western Europe, with full contemporary hand-colouring, numbered 2-27 in a contemporary hand, versos blank without signatures, except Hispaniae Novae with Latin text (some light staining and minor restoration, map of America restored at lower centre-fold, 4 maps with margins partially restored, several maps with marginal ink stains and printers ink scuffing). The collection of 59 maps bound in modern brown calf, covers decorated with blind and gilt stamped tudor rose and Palace of Westminster tools, central blind-stamped arms of Elizabeth I (corners and joints lightly rubbed). Provenance . Original ownership inscription of William Symer dated 1589 (inscription on verso of the Union of the Roses plate and many other maps signed on verso); Roland [Symer], his son (inscription dated 1607). A rare survival of an interesting and important late 16th century composite atlas of Saxton maps, with additional European maps supplied from Abraham Ortelius and Rumold Mercator, many in early states, made up in 1589 for an English gentleman in the aftermath of the Spanish Armada. In the rebinding of the work in the 1950's, the Saxton maps have been arranged into their original numbered order, which does not conform with the accepted settings of the atlas as published, indicating that this collection of maps was assembled as an incomplete grouping. The map of Anglia has the borders without graduations (before 1583, Shirley 128). The selection of Mercator and Ortelius maps shows a particular interest in the Low Countries, Spain, Italy and the Americas. The selection includes Ortelius maps: Typus Orbis Terrarum, Shirley 158 (the latest world map available from 1588 although not included in the Theatrum until 1592); Americae sive novi Orbis; Africae tabula nova; Asiae nova descriptio; Italiae novissima descriptio; Hispaniae Novae; Regni Hispaniae; Angliae Scotiae et Hiberniae cf. Shirley 86 an early unrecorded state without stipple seas and numerous variations; Gallia; Artesia (dated 1587); Westphaliae totius; Frisia occidentalis. For the Rumold Mercator maps, many are in early states before the publishing of the third part of Atlantis pars altera in 1595, probably acquired for binding in London through the good offices of Ortelius in Antwerp, and include Rumold's world map Orbis Terrae, 1587.Shirley 157, a variant not recorded by Koeman Me 12 (with blank verso, text in Latin below map in 4 columns, first column with 17 lines); Europa; Emden; Frisia Occidentalis; Austria; Holland; Geldria; Zeelandia; Flandria; Islandia. Other maps include Scotiae Nova et accurata descriptio , after John LESLIE circa 1589, 410 x 525mm.; AITSINGER, Michael. Leo Belgicus , 1583, 370 x 445mm., (margins restored), Tooley .
