Galley proofs, uncut and unbound, in 17 and 16 numbered quires respectively, with ink stamps of the Edinburgh printers, Morrison and Gibb, dated 31 May-16 September 1920 and 21 June-22 September 1920, and textual corrections in various hands, including the author's. (Some leaves detached from conjugates, slight wear to outer margins, quire 7 of Tales of Unrest with tear at inner margin, without conjugate blank at end of each work.) Morocco-backed blue cloth case. Provenance : purchased from Raphael King, London. PUBLISHER'S PROOFS FOR THE FIRST VOLUME OF CONRAD'S WORKS WITH OVER 30 CORRECTIONS BY THE AUTHOR (Heineman published the works in 20 volumes, 1921-27, in a limited edition of 780 sets). William Heineman died on 5 October, and while much concerned with plans for collections of his work, Conrad himself was far from well. It would appear that the the publishers did as much work on the proofs as possible before passing them onto him, the number of corrections to Almayer's Folly well exceeding those to Tales of Unrest . Errors in typography have been identified in black ink. Another proof reader has then made further amendments in red. Conrad has either corroborated or countermanded some of the corrections made in red, particularly those which are in the nature of queries with a question-mark against them. His own corrections to Almayer's Folly amount to about 26 in total. The first, signed with initials, appears on p. 30 in black ink, two others follow in a lighter ink (pp. 39, 54); between pp. 96 and 186 his corrections are in pencil and again signed; the remaining corrections (pp. 210-256) are in blue crayon, but in this case mostly unsigned. His corrections to Tales of Unrest appear between pp. 6 and 75; they are written in ink and 6 out of 7 are signed with his initials. In both books, the author's corrections show his extraordinary powers of discrimination over minor details of grammar and punctuation. He approves of one lexical correction, 'impassive' for 'impassible' on p. 34 of Almayer's Folly , but not of a grave accent on the middle 'e' of 'cortege.' Ehrsam p. 326.
