THREE WORKS, PRESENTED BY THE CONRAD FAMILY TO DAVID GARNETT: The Last of the Mohicans, Macmillan, 1902, inscribed by Conrad ("To David Garnett from Joseph Conrad Xmas 1902"), with, tipped-in, an autograph letter signed by Conrad, to Garnett, accompanying the gift of all three volumes, recalling his own childhood reading of the books and hoping Garnett will share his enjoyment of them ("...I have great confidence in you; and I believe that you shall respond - as I did in my time - to the genuine feeling of the descriptions and the heroic temper of the narrative.."), 4 pages, 8vo, headed stationery of Pent Farm, Stanford, Kent, 22 December 1902; The Deerslayer, Macmillan, 1900, inscribed to Garnett "with Borys's love 1902", Borys Conrad's hand guided by Joseph Conrad; the Prairie, Macmillan, 1900, inscribed to David Garnett "With love from Jessie Conrad Xmas. 1902"; the three volumes in matching red cloth, wear to spines, spotting, letter with light dust staining and spotting and crudely attached to volume with adhesive tape David Garnett (1892-1981) was the son of Conrad's friend Edward Garnett (see note alongside lot 200). He became a novelist and was closely associated with the Bloomsbury Group.
