CONRAD, JOSEPH. The Secret Agent. A Simple Tale. London: Methuen [1907]. 8vo, original maroon cloth, spine a trifle faded, some very slight rubbing at extremities, maroon half morocco gilt slipcase . FIRST EDITION, 40-page publisher's catalogue dated September 1907 at end, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Conrad on the front free endpaper: "To Mr & Mrs Hope with great affection from the author Sept. 1907" (publication month). Smith 13; Connolly, The Modern Movement , 15. G.F.W. Hope (and his wife) were among Conrad's closest English friends. Conrad first met Hope in London in 1880, and it was through the Hopes that he met his wife Jessie. The Hopes are the dedicatees of Lord Jim (1900). A very good copy of a book rarely found inscribed.
