COPPIN J., "Le Bouclier de lEurope ou la Guerre Sainte contenant des avis... avec une Relation des Voyages faits dans la Turquie, la Thebaide et la Barbarie", Lyon, 1686. First and only edition. 4to (24x17cm), pp. [10] 496p.[6] and 4 plates. Complete. Title with woodcut mark. Contemporary full leather slightly rubbed, spine richly gilt, interior clean and fine. A very good copy. Ex libris of the famous orientalist Ch.Schaefer, publisher of many early manuscript travel accounts for the Levant. Jean Coppin, (16151690), was a French military officer who became monk. In 1638 he had visited Egypt, later travelled all around the Levant. From 1642 to 1646 he was consul to Damiette (Egypt). He fought in the Cretan war. He had a strong belief that only an alliance of all European States could crash the Ottoman power, but he failed in his earlier efforts to convince France, which was always an ally for the Ottomans. With the Holy League victorious war and the conquest of Hungary and Morea, he wrote this book to present in details the Ottoman Empire and achieve his goal, a Christian crusade. Detailed description of the Greek lands and Anatolia in the first part, as also the whole structure of the Ottoman Empire and its multinational inhabitants. The second part covers his further travels to Egypt, Syria and Barbary. EXTREMELY RARE and with FINE provenance. Not in Atabey, Blackmer 402.
