Autograph letter signed, 16th October 1786, 2 pp, 185 x 225 mm. To Edward Hay Esq., in parts: "Anderson's letter gives me great concern. I cannot however ask him to stay & die in this Country (...) I hope he will have heard from Mr Malet. I am inclined to think that it will be receptary that we should have a Resident in India, I should be glad to know his sentiments upon it & should be much obliged to him if He would think out a person whom He thought likely to manage the business well & be arguable to India.(...) Faithfully yours Cornwallis". With a tear along the edge fold, previously repaired, remnants of previous repair in the same place, glue residues on the integral leaf (not written on) and mailing folds, the handwriting is crisp and legible.
