CORSER, Rev. Thomas (1793-1876) -- Catalogue of the First [-Eighth] Portion of the Valuable & Extensive Library. London: Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, 28 July 1868 - 25 June 1873. 8 parts in one, 4 o (253 x 176 mm). Later cloth-backed boards, uncut, original wrappers bound in (some light wear to edges, upper hinge cracked). Provenance : E.P. Goldschmidt (with his shelfmark label). Partially PRICED in a contemporary hand. Complete set of the London sale catalogues through which the extraordinary collection of mainly early English and Elizabethan literature formed by the Rev. Thomas Corser was dispersed. "Corser was one of the most learned and enthusiastic book-collectors of his day, and his noble library contained, besides a wonderful collection of unique and rare editions of the works of the early English poets and dramatists, a fine block-book...seven Caxtons, and a large number of books printed by Machlinia, Wynkin de Worde ... and other early English printers... Mr. Corser also possessed a few choice manuscripts... There were 6,244 lots in the eight sales, and the total amount realized was £19,781... Some additional manuscripts and books which had belonged to Mr. Corser were sold after his death, at Manchester...1876" (Fletcher, pp. 372-376). De Ricci, p. 150.
