Collation, this is very erratic: [-] 2 disjunct = engraved and printed title, a 8 [b 4 + 1 inserted after a3] b-g 8 h-l 4 B-C 8 D 8 + 2 (two additional leaves one signed D2, inserted after D1) E-Z 8 Aa-Zz 8 3A-3C 8 3D 4 [-] 2 disjunct signed 3E3-4 = postscript and errata; the first a3 is a cancel. Engraved title and 4 plates, 2 folding, by William Hole (plate of Strassburg clock, cropped at head as usual); portrait of Count Frederick IV and crest of William Herbert in the text; full page woodcut arms of the Prince of Wales. (Slight clean marginal tear in b3; small hole in 3A7; inkstain on Zz8; a few minor ruststains.) 18th-century red morocco gilt, covers tooled with a wide border of flowers, spine with raised bands in six compartments with gilt decoration, blue morocco label. FIRST EDITION, possibly the first or a variant issue. According to Ben Jonson in an acrostic on b4 the author published the work 'at his owne charge'. 6 pages of 'an explication of the emblems of the frontispiece' by Ben Jonson; 128 pages of 'panegyric verses upon the author and his booke' by more than 60 authors, including Ben Jonson, Thomas Campion, George Chapman John Donne (3 poems), Michael Drayton, etc. An account of a journey, mostly on foot through Europe. According to Pforzheimer "there probably has never been another such combination of learning and unconscious buffoonery as here set forth." A REMARKABLY FINE AND COMPLETE COPY.
