cover 1857, 5c on 13c Dark Red Manuscript Provisional Surcharge (7), type II numeral with short flag, clear to large margins except very slightly in at bottom, used in combination with United States 10c Green type III (15) and 1c Blue type II (7) horizontal pair , former with large margins, tiny tear at top right, latter with ample to large margins, Hawaiian and U.S. stamps tied by "San Francisco, CAL. 6 Apr" c.d.s. cancels on fresh 1857 cover to New Bedford, Mass., light red "HONOLULU* U.S. Postage Paid *MAR 11" pmk. of origin, this style postmark confirms payment of U.S. postage in Honolulu, one of only seventeen recorded covers franked with the extremely rare Hawaiian 5c on 13c Manuscript Provisonal Surcharge stamp, of these seventeen covers, only five are additionally franked with U.S. 10c 1855 Issue stamps, this cover was carried by the ship Yankee which departed Honolulu on March 11, 1857, arrived in San Francisco on April 4th and departed San Francisco on April 5th for the East Coast of the United States via Panama, the stamps have minor faults and there is a light cover rub of no real importance at extreme top left, AN EXTRAORDINARY HAWAIIAN POSTAL HISTORY RARITY AND A FABULOUS HAWAIIAN FIVE-CENTS ON THIRTEEN-CENTS MANUSCRIPT PROVISIONAL SURCHARGE-UNITED STATES COMBINATION FRANKING COVER photo
