Miles Coverdale (1488-1568), translator of the Bible, adopted Lutheran views, assisting Robert Barnes in his defence on a charge of heresy, 1526, and preaching against images before going abroad. His first translations of theological tracts were published in 1534. He translated at Antwerp, apparently in the pay of Jacob van Meteren, the Bible and Apocrypha from German (Zurich, 1531), and from Latin versions with the aid of Tyndale's New Testament. His translation was first printed perhaps by Christopher Froschauer of Zurich, and brought into England by James Nicolson of Southwark, publisher of the above tract, in 1535. He modified his version, 1537, superintended the printing of the 1539 "Great Bible" at Paris 1538-39, and in London 1539. He superintended "Cranmer's Bible", 1540, became pastor and schoolmaster at Bergzabern in Deux-Ponts 1543-7 and returned to England, 1548. He was Bishop of Exeter 1551-3, continued to return to the continent, but spent his last years preaching privately in London.
