CRANMER, Thomas (1489-1556). A Defence of the True and Catholike Doctrine of the Sacrament of the Body and Bloud of Our Saviour Christ . London: [Reynold Wolfe, 1550]. 4° (187 x 135mm). Black letter. Title with woodcut border and vignette [McKerrow and Ferguson 73], colophon with publisher's device [McKerrow 119], woodcut initials. Contemporary calf, with panel of blind fillets and roll of medallion heads enclosing a small device (joints rubbed and splitting, minor cut and chip marks to covers, lacks ties). Provenance : Thomas Maker, his gift to Philip Cowrtney (contemporary inscription by Cowrtney on title; his marginalia; initials 'P.C.' on colophon) -- Richard Monckton Milnes (1809-1885; Crewe Hall bookplate) -- George Goyder (bookplate; sold Sotheby's London, 19 July 1993, lot 54). Three editions of Archbishop Cranmer's repudiation of the doctrine of transubstantiation were published in the same year. This is the third edition with B4r catchword 'des' and S1r catchword 'before' (no comma). However, ESTC notes that sheets may be mixed with STC 6000 and 6001. The roll on the attractive contemporary binding is conceptually similar to Oldham English Blind-Stamped Bindings 849, but differs in detail. The binding stubs are from a late 13th/early 14th century glossed law book, Southern French, with flourished initials. Pforzheimer 236; STC 6002.
