CRUIKSHANK, George, illustrator (1792-1878). -- THACKERAY, William Makepeace (1811-1863). [Manuscript title:] "An Essay on the Genius of George Cruikshank Illustrated with several hundred Etchings and Wood-Engravings, Selected from his works from 1810-1872." [London, circa 1870s]. One volume extended to four, 4 o (300 x 235 mm). Extra-illustrated with approximately 300 etchings, woodcuts and engravings, many colored, either inlaid or mounted to size. 19th-century half morocco, spines gilt-lettered, edges gilt (minor rubbing to joints). A VERY FINE SET, extra-illustrated with a multitude of George Cruikshank's illustrations from various works. The volumes span Cruikshank's life and career, and include examples of some of his earliest works in the early nineteenth century through the 1870s. Included are illustrations from: German Popular Stories , 1823; Punch and Judy , 1828; Life of Napoleon , 1829; Almanack , 1835; Sketches by Boz , 1836; Tower of London , 1840; Table Book , 1845; Cinderella , 1854; and others.
