CUIR-CISELE BOX – A jewel box with cuir-ciselé decoration. [France or Flanders: early 15th century].
CUIR-CISELE BOX – A jewel box with cuir-ciselé decoration. [France or Flanders: early 15th century]. (60mm high x 130mm wide x 130mm deep). Decorated leather over wooden boards worked in cuir-ciselé, punched pointillé and blind-tooling, lid and sides with foliage pattern on a pointillé ground, bottom diapered with blind fillets, five iron bands mounted across the lid terminating in rosettes, one extending to a front-mounted lock, two others to swivel closures, shaped metal band mounted on lid-edge, 6 wide metal bands mounted on sides and bottom, rosettes onsides, metal corner piece, shaped handle on lid and right side (missing from left), inner lid lined with red-dyed goatskin, paper lining to box. (Leather on sides and bottom slightly worn with some loss, later black goatskin repair to inner edge.) A charming example of a ‘Minnekästchen’, used to safeguard precious possessions. ‘Minnekästchen’ were often decorated with scenes of courtly love, from whence the name derives.
