CYPRUS - CARTARO, MARIO (1540-1614).
CYPRUS - CARTARO, MARIO (1540-1614). Cyprus Insula olim Macharia . Venice: Ferrando Bertelli, 1562. Engraved map of Cyprus, 180 x 246mm (Some discolouration to upper left corner of map). A very rare and highly decorative map of Cyprus. It is one of the earliest works of Mario Cartaro who later became official cartographer to the Kingdom of Naples (1583-1594). This map was first issued in Rome in 1560, and this second edition, was published by the Venetian mapmaker Ferrando Bertelli. It uses pictorial signs rather than toponyms to identify major feaures, a style more reminiscent of Benedetto Bordone's 1534 woodcut map of the island. Nicosia and Farmagusta rise prominently out of the landscape. The Lion of St.Mark, the symbol of Venice appears on the east coast, symbolically staking the Serene Republic's claim to Cyprus. Hadjipaschalis & Iacovou I M&A(9), fig.85, Tooley:1939 no.180, Woodward:1996 watermark 130.
