Contemporary diced calf backed boards, spine with red lettering label and gilt ruling. Condition: occasional light browning: edges of boards rubbed. Provenance: H. Payne, (1826 signature to front pastedown). first edition in english of Da Vinci's Treatise on Painting, originally compiled at the height of the Renaissance in 1480 but not published until the 17th century (France, 1681) It is a thorough examination of painting as a science with a focus on anatomy. Da Vinci's excellent anatomical studies are presented here along with landscapes and folding tables depicting prespective angles.
