Beschreibung:

Dakota TerritoryProceedings of the Convention of the Citizens Constitutional Association of Dakota, held at Canton, D.T., June 21st, 1882. [Yankton, S.D.:] The Dakota Herald, 1882 14 pp. (225 x 152 mm). Text in double columns; light toning, creased at center fold. Original printed wrappers (which supply title and imprint). Brown cloth chemise and slipcase lettered gilt. At the time of this one-day convention, a bill was before Congress to admit southern Dakota to the Union. The Citizens Constitutional Association had assembled in order to form the future state government. Ten counties were represented at Canton, located south of Sioux Falls on the Big Sioux River. The convention prescribed legislation to prevent monopolies and extravagant government spending, as well as calling for the establishment of a school fund and the control of liquor traffic. Although the congressional bill failed to pass, the Association continued to work for statehood, which was finally achieved in 1889. Scarce: Allen records only one copy at the South Dakota Historical Society, and Worldcat lists six copies in American institutions. There seems to have been no copy in commerce since 1976. REFERENCEAllen, Dakota Imprints 220; not in Streeter or Graff
