Read more In contemporary art history, Damien Hirst's Spot paintings and prints have turned out to be stunningly successful conceptual works. The idea, and the branding, are his. The works are produced by assistants according to strict instructions and controls. Gerhard Richter had earlier on made several colour-card paintings, a comparable idea that he did not extend into a prolonged series (unlike Hirst, he disclaims all associations with conceptualism), and they did not become as instantly recognisable as Hirst's Spots, with their toy-like quality and cheerful colours.
