Dampier was the best known of the group of buccaneers that tormented the Spaniards in the South Sea from 1680 to 1720. He was part of the first English voyage to land on Australian shores and commanded the second one, determining: "It is not yet determined whether [Australia] is an Island or a Main Continent; but I am certain that it joyns neither to Asia, Africa, nor America." Dampier had objected to the inclusion of Funnell's account as it reflected badly upon him, but was overruled by his publisher. Also appended to the set are accounts of the voyages of William Cowley, John Wood Bartholomew Sharp, and Roberts. Hill pp 77-78; Sabin 18373. Provenance: bookplates of Charles Arthur Wynne Finch; ownership inscription, "Woodcliff Hall." See illustration.
