DANTE Alighieri (1265-1321). Le Terze Rime. Venice: Aldus Manutius August 1502.
DANTE Alighieri (1265-1321). Le Terze Rime. Venice: Aldus Manutius August 1502. Aldine 8° (162 x 94mm). Collation: a-z 8 A-G 8 H 4 (a1r title, a1v subtitle, l2 blank, x3v blank, H4v with device). 244 leaves. (Infills to title in area of ownership inscription, heavy water-staining to first and last two quires, mainly marginal, some lighter staining and occasional soiling elsewhere.) Contemporary Venetian gilt-tooled calf, covers with multiple blind fillets, gilt outer border of leaf tools, and inner scrollwork panel filled with a central lozenge and small tools, spine with three raised bands and cross-hatching in blind, gilt and gauffered edges (some restoration, some bending of boards with fine cracks to lower cover). Provenance : contemporary side notes in a humanist hand -- Alexandro Bastiano of Padua (early inscription on title). FIRST ALDINE EDITION, second issue with Aldine device on verso of final leaf, IN A CONTEMPORARY GILT-TOOLED VENETIAN BINDING. This was the first 'portable' edition of the Divine Comedy, while the second issue marks the first appearance in print of Aldus's anchor device. The anchor was added as type-setting changes were made to the Dante during the press run. Quires a-c were also completely re-set, the present copy having the headline 'INFERNO' on a2r, and the headline 'INF' in all the other leaves of these quires. Adams D-83; Ahmanson-Murphy 59.5; Mambelli 17; Renouard 34:5; L. Bigliazzi, Aldo Manuzio tipografo 1494-1515 (Florence, 1994) 63.
