[DARWIN, Charles (1809-1882)] – [Attributed to:] Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879)
Portrait photograph, [?taken Isle of Wight, July 1868]
Albumen print (117 x 92mm) on a card mount (165 x 108mm), (fine surface cracklure, the mount a little bumped at corners). Provenance: Henrietta Litchfield (1843-1927), Darwin's daughter; her pencil signature and pen annotation 'Charles Darwin' on the verso [originally enclosed with a letter dated 31 July 1892 along with the preceding lot].
A photograph of Charles Darwin attributed to Julia Margaret Cameron presented to the recipient by Darwin's daughter Henrietta Litchfield. In the summer of 1868, Julia Margaret Cameron invited the Darwin family to stay at Dumbola Lodge, her house on the Isle of Wight; they were joined by guests including Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Darwin's friend and colleague, Joseph Hooker. Cameron, who had already produced portraits of 19th-century luminaries including William Herschel and Tennyson, made four exposures of Darwin and by 27 July Colnaghi’s had announced: ‘We are glad to observe her [Cameron's] gallery of great men enriched by a very fine portrait of Charles Darwin’.
