DARWIN, Charles Robert (1809-1882, editor). The Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle ... during the years 1832 to 1836: Part III, Birds, by John Gould . London: Smith, Elder and Co., [1838]-1841. Part III only in one volume, 4 (306 x 234mm). 50 hand-coloured lithographic plates by Elizabeth Gould after John Gould (Some spotting, several plate numbers or captions cropped, plate 28 restored at upper corner, lacking half title.) Contemporary straight-grained black morocco, gilt (joints rubbed). Provenance : John S. Bedford, Pendrea (bookplate). PROBABLY THE ONLY WORK IN WHICH ALL THE LITHOGRAPHS ARE ENTIRELY THE WORK OF THE GOULDS (see Jackson Bird Illustrators in Early Lithography , 1975, p. 45). Darwin's entire 5-volume report on his circumnavigation in the Beagle was published in parts, of which ornithology comprised 5 numbers, each containing 10 plates. Darwin acknowledges the assistance of Thomas Gray of the British Museum in the matter of synonymy and general arrangement, while crediting Gould with the new descriptions of genera and species, and himself providing information on habits and ranges.
