DAY, Richard.] A Booke of Christian Prayers collected out of the ancient writers and best learned in our tyme, London: Printed by John Daye, 1581, sm. 4°, second edition, title within woodcut border Tree of Jesse, full-page woodcut of Queen Elizabeth on verso, each page within historiated woodcut borders, woodcut initials, woodcut printer's device at end (title slightly frayed and soiled at margins, slight stain on M2, wax stain to lower part of X4r, paper fault in lower margin of S1, S4 detached, some soiling and occasional staining of margins), early textile binding, covers of crimson velvet (faded) embroidered with metal threads in scrollwork design surrounding the monogram "A. B." in central panel (rebacked, preserving part of old spine), old ties, modern morocco box. [STC 6430] At the end are 7pp. of manuscript notes, 16th to 18th century, on various subjects, including medical remedies: "an excellent purge ... a serecloth for the goute," a record of prophecies: "the destruction of Popery in 1790 ... the stars will wander and the moon turn as blood in 1800. The hole world will tremble in 1805 ... there will be a universal earth quake after which all religious Dissentions will cease ... for the Blessed Millenium," and in 1692: "a note taken of what cloths ... belongeth too Charles Billingsley and sent with him when hee went to Schoole," and another recording: "Monday October 30th, 1797, his Majesty George the Third Imbarked at Greenwich in the Roial Yat to see the fleet."
