[DEARBORN, Henry (1757–1829)]. –– WILKINSON, James (1757–1825). Memoirs of My Own Times. Philadelphia: Abraham Small, 1816. 8vo. Volume 1 (of 3) only. 8 plates, 3 folding facsimiles and 6 folding tables at rear. Modern maroon faux leather; titles gilt stamped (renewed endpapers, notations in pencil, offsetting). SIGNED AND DATED INSCRIPTION ON PAGE 186 BY HENRY DEARBORN which reads in full, “This is not true. S[?], Gilby & Dearborn went to St. Clair and requested that Poor’s Brigade march. He was sent to reinforce the guard or to call it in. He would do neither. H.A.S. Dearborn 1820.” Henry Dearborn was an American military officer whose journals provide an invaluable record of some of the most consequential battles of the Revolutionary War. He was appointed Secretary of War under Thomas Jefferson and is the namesake of Fort Dearborn, the first settlement on land which would eventually become Chicago.
