Title: Del Monte and Monterey Peninsula, Southern Pacific travel poster, framed Author: Southern Pacific Place: Monterey, CA Publisher: Date: [c. 1928] Description: Vintage Del Monte / Pebble Beach color travel poster from a painting by San Francisco artist Maurice Logan, issued by the Southern Pacific Railroad, showing golfers at the Del Monte Golf and Country Club, near Pebble Beach, in the Monterey Peninsula. Golfer's dressed in late 1920's style attire. Loosely laid inside wooden frame with glass front, in-between double-matting with blue linen outer front and foam backing. Poster measures approximately 23x16" (31x24¼" overall with frame). Rare original color golf poster, issued to promote travel to the Del Monte resort before it was named Pebble Beach. The golfer image prominently swinging his club in the front has a striking resemblance to Bobby Jones and very well could be Jones himself. The artist, Maurice Logan (1886-1977), was one of San Francisco's best-known commercial illustrators and painters, who was commissioned to design a series of posters for the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, which includes this handsome Del Monte poster. During this era, Logan produced colorful expressionist oil paintings and exhibited them as a member of a group known as the Society of Six. Printing code on bottom left corner of poster margin: "A-185 (4-23-28--2500P)"; presumably indicating that there were 2500 copies printed on April 23, 1928. Lot Amendments Condition: Horizontal creases and occasional slight and faint cracks; otherwise very good to near fine - clean and bright, expertly framed and matted. Scarce. Additional shipping charges will apply. Item number: 160617
