DeMaria Mine, Placer County, California Originally owned by Mr. Clement DeMaria and a partner from about the turn of the last century this claim still is under the supervision of the same family. After Clement's death, his son, John, assumed the management of the claim but he seemed not to have as much success as his father. Although there are minimal records of production during this era, one State report from 1936 cited that for "many years this mine has been noted for occasional 'pockets' of coarse crystallized gold." From the period from 1938 until he gave up active mining operations, he found only “traces” of gold. Even John’s wife stated that her husband had personally mined less than one ounce of gold on their claims during a period of 40 years! Relying upon others to do their mining the DeMaria family were instead content to collect royalties from their claims. The present example is from an older find from this mine and is an excellent example of the specimens found here. It displays fine crystallization with some traces of white quartz at the base. Measuring 2 ½ x 1 x ¾in
