Provenance: The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION. CGC Census: 46 graded copies (45 Universal, 1 Restored). GPAnalysis: Only one reported sale of a restored copy in any grade: an 8.0 (SP) sold for $201 in 6/05. For comparison purposes, here are recent Universal sales: A 1.0 sold for $145 in 9/20; a 2.5 sold for $150 in 2/21. Credits: Cover: Jack Burnley (Charles Paris inks). Scripts: Bill Finger. Art: Jack Burnley (ghosting as Bob Kane), Lee Harris, John Daly, Curt Swan. DETECTIVE COMICS #131: CGC certified: Good (2.0). Purple label: Restored (C-1). Cream to off-white pages. Grader notes: "Reattached with tape cover; ALL 3 EDGES OF PAGE 12 TRIMMED; heavy tape cover; light staining to cover; moderate creasing to cover; moderate spine stress lines to cover; small amount of color touch on left bottom & right bottom front cover; small amount of glue on interior spine." Provenance: The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION. CGC Census: 45 graded copies (40 Universal, 2 Qualified, 3 Restored). GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. A restored 3.0 (C-1) sold for $202 in 9/22. For comparison purposes, here are recent Universal sales: A 2.5 sold for $104 in 6/19; a 3.0 sold for $156 in 6/10. Credits: Cover: Jack Burnley (Charles Paris inks). Scripts: Bill Finger. Art: Jack Burnley (ghosting as Bob Kane), Lee Harris, John Daly, Curt Swan. #130: Bat-cyclopedia: Michael Fleisher's otherwise comprehensive Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman inexplicably skips this ish entirely, as does Robert Greenberger's Essential Batman Encyclopedia, so let's consult DC.fandom.com instead: "Batman and Robin follow the trail of several criminals who want to obtain a mysterious box, but every time one of them manages to get it and open it, they are shocked to see the content inside and soon they are killed by the next criminal who wants to retrieve the box. When Batman finally gets the box, he tracks down the owner, who is in fact the notorious criminal Diamond King. The old gangster prepared the box as a trap for all the deceased criminals, to avenge his son's death at their hands. After the case is solved, Batman gives away the valuable contents of the box for charity, but he keeps the empty box in his secret hall of trophies." — DC.fandom.com. Swipe file: Quentin Tarantino fans may find similarities between this ish's mysterious box, whose unseen cargo is the MacGuffin that propels the storyline to its conclusion, and the enigmatic suitcase in Tarantino's 1994 film Pulp Fiction, the unseen contents of which drive the movie's Vincent Vega / Jules Winnfield storyline. Was Tarantino influenced by this Batman mag? That’d be nifty, but probably not. Even though Tarantino denied it in an A.V. Club interview, the glowing suitcase was most likely influenced by a similar gimmick in the 1955 film noir Kiss Me Deadly. Tarantino says he’s more of a Marvel fan anyway (see "Quentin Tarantino: Batman Is Not a Very Interesting Character," Variety.com, October 10, 2013). #131: Bat-cyclopedia: "In January 1948 Batman and Robin battle 'TRIGGER JOE' TRAVERS.... a ruthless Gotham City crime boss who puts his naive younger brother Steve Travers through medical school, sets him up in a fancy new office immediately after his graduation, and then, by threatening to kill Steve's girlfriend if Steve refuses to cooperate, forces him to become the gang's 'official sawbones,' treating their
