The 'Crimson Avenger' on the cover of No. 22 didn't do the trick, but Batman did, and got the regular cover spot from No. 35 onward.... The 'Bat-Man' who appears in Detective No. 27 is not yet fully formed — note the stiff cape and hyphenated name — but many of the hallmarks are already there, notably the hero's grim demeanor, his other identity of Bruce Wayne, and his police connection in Commissioner Gordon." Bat-cyclopedia: "In May 1939 Batman makes his textual debut and matches wits with the villainous ALFRED STRYKER.... a ruthless chemical company executive who has two of his three former partners murdered... in an attempt to establish himself as sole owner of the Apex Chemical Company. Stryker dies when, during a climactic battle with BATMAN, he plummets headlong into a vat of acid. 'A fitting end for his kind,' murmurs Batman grimly (Det No. 27, May '39: 'The Case of the Chemical Syndicate')." — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, pp. 115, 345.
