DETECTIVE COMICS Nos. 408, 409, 410, 412, 413, 414, 415, 416, 417, 418, 419, 420, 421, 422, 423 * Lot of 15 Comics Provenance: DC Universe Collection Publisher: DC [Indicia: National Periodical Publications, Inc.] Date Published: 1971-1972 Description: Detective Comics #s 408-410 and 412-423, lot of 15 issues. #413 is the UK edition. Generally G/VG (3.0) or better. Covers, stories and art by Neal Adams, Len Wein, Marv Wolfman, Dick Giordano, Frank Robbins, Bob Brown, Frank Giacoia, Denny O'Neil, Steve Englehart, Irv Novik, and Michael Wm. Kaluta. The Dynamic Duo vs Morrison's 'Monkish Men': "The O'Neil-Adams collaborations were state-of-the-art for maturing fans who wanted themselves and their passions to be taken seriously... These were teenagers who began to insist that comics could and should be for adults, mostly because they didn't want to let go of childhood and had to find a new way to sell its pleasures back to themselves... Thus superhero comics began their slow retreat from the mainstream of popular entertainment to its geek-haunted margins, where their arcane flavors could be distilled and savored by solitary, monkish boys and men." — Grant Morrison, quoted in Glen Weldon's The Caped Crusade: Batman and the Rise of Nerd Culture. Simon & Schuster: 2016, p. 102. Note: At the buyer's discretion, this lot of raw comics can be submitted by PBA to CGC for grading and encapsulation with a "DC Universe Collection" provenance designation on the labels. To request this service, contact PBA's comic book department for terms and conditions. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com. Enjoying PBA's Batman sale? A very small number of softcover and limited edition hardcover auction catalogues are available for purchase.
