[Devotion] Book of prayers. Latin manuscript on strong paper, 8vo (21,7 x cm): ff. written in black ink. Contemp. calf, so-called cathedral binding with gilt-ruled border, gilt decorated spine and turn ins, silk endsheets, a.e.g. (upper and lower joints part. broken, edges a bit rubbed). Manuscript prayer book illuminated in neo-Gothic style by Victor de Suremain for Jeanne de Lalaing. Early example inspired by John Russell's idea of the missal as a cathedral. Contents: Pater Noster; Ave Maria; followed by (according to the title page): "Davidis poenitentis psalmi; Stabat Mater Dolorosa; Salve regina mater misericordiae; Litaniae et antiphonae Sanctae Virginis Mariae." Decoration: Coat of arms of Jeanne de Lalaing; title in cathedral style; decorated right margins with "droleries"; decorated initials, capitals in red, often heightened with liquid gold, line-fillers. Illumination: 7 miniatures within decorated borders: King David with harp, Mater Dolorosa, Adoration of the Magi, Presentation at the Temple, Assumption of Mary, Saint John on Patmos, Coronation of the Virgin.
