Madrid: Francisco Sanchez, 1588. 4 o (200 x 146mm). Collation: Π 4 A-Z 8 2A-2Z 8 3A-3D 8 3E 4 . 408 leaves. Roman type. Woodcut arms on title, woodcut capitals. Numerous woodcuts in the text depicting a variety of early surgical implements and devices. (Edges of title and inner margin of second leaf with neat repairs, A2 with small paper flaw, clean tear to 2S4, 2T5 upper corner renewed with loss of page number and a few words of shoulder note, occasional browning and spotting.) Contemporary limp vellum, vellum ties. (Head of spine torn, new endleaves.) Provenance : "Conventus S. Caroli ad 4 fontes" inscribed in early hand on titlepage; a few early marginal diagrams and notes. FIRST EDITION of the first published book on the diseases of the urinary tract, by "the father of urology" (Garrison & Morton). Diaz, about whom little is known, was appointed physician to King Philip II, and was the subject of sonnets by Lope de Vega (printed here on Π4v) and Cervantes. The three sections of the extensive treatise are devoted to the kidney, bladder and urethra respectively. In his address to the reader (Π2r) Diaz mentions guaiacum, a new medicine from the Spanish settlements in the New World. Derived from the sap of the lignum-vitae tree, it was introduced to Spain in 1508 and widely used in the treatment of stones and syphilis. Castiglione, p.481; Garrison-Morton 4160 (" Diaz described the 'high' (superpubic) operation for the removal of bladder stones and the urethral sound of Aldarete"); Leonardo, History of Surgery p.360; NLM/Durling 1123; Waller 2430; Norman 634. RARE. Sold not subject to return.
