DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). Autograph letter signed to Edward Chapman Devonshire Terrace, 25 January 1851 , sending a book to Chapman to be sent on to Townshend, one page, 8vo , conjugate leaf removed. The friendship between Dickens and Chauncy Hare Townshend (1798-1868) dated from the early 1840s. Townshend's Facts in Mesmerism was published in 1840. By 1851 he was living in Switzerland. Townshend was the dedicatee of Great Expectations (1861) and Dickens acted as his literary executor. Not in The Letters of Charles Dickens , but a published letter of Dickens to Chapman of 23 November 1850 refers to 'a parcel of books' which Chapman was sending Townshend, which provided an opportunity for Dickens to send one too.
