THE ECKEL - PARRISH - SUZANNET COPY OF THE EXCESSIVELY RARE FIRST PUBLISHED ISSUE of the Daily News, edited by Dickens. From the important libraries of pre-eminent Dickens collectors and bibliographers: John C. Eckel, author of the first comprehensive bibliography of the first editions of Charles Dickens; Morris L. Parrish, bibliographer of Victorian literature, whose extensive collection of which is now at Princeton; Comte Alain de Suzannet; and Kenyon Law Starling. Founded as a rival to the Morning Chronicle , published on 21 January 1846, with a leader announcing its intention to advocate "Principles of Progress and Improvement; of Education, Civil and Religious Liberty, and Equal Legislation; Principle, such as its conductors believe the advancing spirit of the time requires; the condition of the country demands: and Justice, Reason, and Experience legitimately sanction" (Editorial). The first of Dickens's letters from Italy is printed here as: "Travelling Letters. Written on the Road," subsequently published, with alterations, as the first chapter of Pictures from Italy . Although Dickens had for years dreamed of founding a great liberal newspaper with himself as editor, the resulting paper was not initially a great success and after 17 issues Dickens passed on the editorship to his friend John Forster. Michael Slater records a trial issue of The Daily News published on the 19th of January in the catalogue of the Suzannet Collection at the Dickens House, and another in the archives of the The Daily News Ltd . EXCEPTIONALLY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current , no other copy of this issue has appeared at auction since this copy at the Suzannet sale in 1971. Not in the British Library, nor the Library of Congress, one copy located in the Harry Ransome Center at Texas.
