Etched frontispiece, additional title and 41 plates by and after R. Seymour (7), R.W. Buss (2), and Hablot K. Browne (34, signed as "Nemo" or "Phiz"). Parts X, XI, XIII, XVII and XVIII with the plates in two states, the alternative state loosely inserted. All plates before letters, except some with page numbers. (Plates in pt. 1 detached and slightly frayed at foot, final leaves in pt. 20 slighly frayed at bottom margin, occasional light soiling, without some advertisements, notably the 4ll. advertisement for Chapman and Hall's works in pt. 1, the Pickwick Advertiser in pt. 4 and pp. 13-14 of Walter Scott ad. in pt. XVII.) Original wood-engraved blue green wrappers by John Jackson after Seymour, pt. XVII unopened. (Front wrapper to pt. 1 split along spine and frayed at edges, also with small red stain, spine of pt. X chipped, a few other spines chipped at head and tail, back wrapper to pts. 19/20 slightly torn.) Preserved in brown morocco pull-off case, c. 1900. Provenance : Thomas Wallace (tipped-in armoral bookplate) -- [Harry F. Marks, New York (bookseller's label in slipcase)]. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PARTS. Illustrated works were commonly published in monthly parts, but not novels, and in Pickwick Dickens inaugurated an entirely new method of publishing fiction. This copy conforms wholly with points 1-6 and 10-11 in Eckel's 11-point list of "accepted conditions" for "a perfect Pickwick ". Pt 1 contains the second reprint of E1 (see Hatton & Cleaver p. 13); three of the plates are second Seymour plates in first state, one ("The Sagacious Dog") is the second state of the first Seymour plate. Frontispiece and additional title both in first state. Pt. III has the address by the publisher, pts. II, X and XV by the author. Inner wrappers on pts. 1-3, 5, 7-8 blank.
