Original green pictorial printed wrappers, uncut, part 6 partially unopened, part 9 entirely unopened (part 19/20 rebacked with corners of front wrapper renewed slightly affecting engraving at edge and ad on verso, other small repairs to a few other covers and spines, spine slightly defective on part 15, part 13 with some discoloration at top of front wrapper); morocco-backed folding box. Provenance : Contemporary ownership signatures on front wrapper of parts 1-3, 5 and 7 ("G.H. Bosanquet"); Comte Alain de Suzannet (bookplate; his sale, Sotheby's, 22 November 1971, lot 21 for £1100). FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PARTS OF DICKENS'S FIRST NOVEL, second issue text in parts 1-13, and 16; first issue text in parts 14-15, 17, 18 and 19/20. All wrappers are dated 1836 and bear the words "With illustrations"; the inner wrappers on parts 1-3 with advertisements; the inner lower wrapper of part 4 and both inner wrappers of parts 5 and 6 are blank. Lacking adverstisments (including Advertiser) in parts 1-12; part 13 (lacks "Argyle Rooms"); parts 14-17 complete; part 18 (lacking Advertiser, Simpson's Herbal Pills and Mechi's Catalogue). Printed addresses present in parts 10, 15, 17, 18 and 19/20 (lacking in parts 2 and 3). All plates are before letters, and the four plates by Seymour in part 1 are in early states; "The Dying Clown" plate by Seymour in part 2 is in the first state, before the signature; the two plates by Buss are present in part 3; the two plates in parts 4 and 5 are in second state; the two plates in part 6 are the first state, with the page numbers interchanged; first plate (no. 16) in part 7 in first state, second plate (no. 17) in second state; two plates in each of parts 8-14 are in the first (or only) state; two plates in part 15 are second states; and the remaining plates in parts 16 to 19/20 are in the first (or only) state.
