Title: Dictes and Sayings of the Philosophers Author: Place: Detroit, MI Publisher: Printed by George G. Booth at the Cranbrook Press Date: 1901 Description: 124, [2] pp. Printed in black letter. With elaborate woodcut border around the double-page title-page and the final leaf of text; woodcut initials, head and tailpieces, five of them hand-illuminated in colors, as is a portion of the border on the final leaf. 28x21.5 cm (11x8¾"), half vellum & boards, leather spine label. No. 80 pf 244 copies (but apparently only 193 were bound). Fine printing in the style of the original 1477 edition printed by William Caxton one of his earliest books printed in England (vying with the undated Canterbury Tales), the first dated book printed in England, and the first printed in England to have a printer's colophon showing the name of the printer, and the place of publication. Lot Amendments Condition: Boards a little darkened with some edge wear, vellum with light soiling, spine label rubbed with a small chip; very good, internally fine. Item number: 261550
