Diệp Minh Châu (1919-2002), born in Nhơn Thạnh, Giồng Trôm, Bến Tre province, in a peasant family, was a famous Vietnamese painter and sculptor. In 1939, Diệp Minh Châu attended the preparatory class of the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine, directed by Nam Sơn1. In 1940, he passed the entrance exam and was awarded valedictorian of his class. In 1945, when the whole country was bubbling with the spirit of struggle and independence, Diệp Minh Châu went to the battlefield with a backpack containing materials for drawing. He is present in all circumstances. Many of his works have gone down in history, becoming treasures for many major art museums in the country and around the world. In 'Les bateaux et la mer', a purple twilight, sky and sea seem to be at rest, after a day of fishing accompanying these boats to the shore. The sailors have lowered the sails and leave their boat. You can see some sketched silhouettes. Alone in the distance, still moving, one of them is about to reach the coast. The same register of colours harmonises the whole work, inviting to share like a tranquility at the end of a day of work. In the distance some waves seem to move away to give way to the serenity of the night. One could imagine being in a theatre scene representing the infinite love story between boat and sea, where at the end of the performance, the curtain lowers, colouring the scene with its purple effects. And everyone, to leave in silence with a heart full of wonder. 'Only the boat can perceive/ How immense is the sea/ Only the sea can know/ Where the boat goes and returns. The days they don't see each other/ The sea whitens with distress/ The days they don't see each other/ The boat is heartbroken with sadness/ If the boat came out of the sea/ There would be only storms and turmoil...' (Xuân Quỳnh2). Same provenance as 'Returning to the village' by Nguyễn Phan Chánh, 'Les bateaux et la mer' by Diệp Minh Châu was acquired directly in Hanoi in 1959. It was formerly part of the collection of Miklós Rev, then of the present owner by descent. 1 Founded by decree dated October 24, 1927, this preparatory course intended to play both the role of training and learning, artistic craftsmanship and selection instrument for the recruitment of the school itself, was entrusted to an Annamite technical teacher of Decorative Arts: Nam-Sơn Nguyễn văn Thọ. Her most famous love poems have been set to song.
