Differences among the Irish Support in America De Valera (Eamon) An interesting letter signed, 2pp. top copy, dated July 6th, 1920, on headed notepaper of 'Elected Government of The Republic of Ireland, American Delegation,' Washington, concerning differences among groups supporting Irish Independence in Canada. De Valera reminds Major Kinhead, the recipient of the letter, that he consented to act as a sort of liaison officer and advisor between the Friends of Irish Freedom and the protestant Friends', and goes on to mention a 'serious matter 'in connection with the Protestant Friends. Apparently De Valera has asked Miss Hughes to organise a Self-Determination for Ireland League of Canada on a democratic basis and she has done so, but several members of the 'Protestant Friends' are 'taking into Canada and propagating there, the differences that unfortunately have been promoted here. 'He asks Major Kincead to see that 'those speakers from the Protestant Friends from this side, who are maintained in Canada by the funds of F.O.I.F. organisation, and who are making trouble there, be recalled immediately,' etc. etc. As a m/ss, w.a.f. * A fine letter, typical of De Valera's somewhat inflexible attitude at the time, which of course led to major difficulties with Judge Cohalon and others in the United States. With a good clear signature in pen.
