DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge] 'Lewis CARROLL' (1832-1898). Through the Looking-Glass, and what Alice found there . London: Richard Clay for Macmillan, '1872' [1871]. 8° (183 x 125mm). Frontispiece [retaining tissue guard] and illustrations after John Tenniel (some light spotting, browning or marking). Original red cloth gilt by Burn & Co, boards gilt with designs after Tenniel, spine gilt-lettered, gilt edges (extremities rubbed and bumped, spine a little faded and leant, somewhat shaken, hinges split). Provenance : E. Phipson (pencilled name on half title). FIRST EDITION, in the original binding. This copy has the misprint 'wade' for 'wabe' in the second line of the poem 'Jabberwocky', and pages 95 and 98 are correctly numbered (no priority established). Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 84.
