Antwerp: Christopher Plantin, 1568. 8vo, 170 x 105 mm., contemporary Dutch calf over pasteboards, sides panelled in blind with central gilt arabesque medallion and small gilt fleurons at corners of inner panel, single gilt fleur-de-lys in compartments, early paper lettering-piece in second compartment, g.e., head and tail of spine and corners restored, original vellum manuscript endleaves cut away, occasional marginal soiling; folding buckram case . FIRST EDITION, italic type, 107 woodcuts of flowers and herbs in text, most full-page, most (all those preceding page 234) roughly colored by a contemporary hand (the white oxidized on pp. 136, 226 and 229), woodcut printer's device on title, woodcut initials. . A very attractive copy of Dodoens' study of plants considered interesting for their scent or flowers. The woodcuts are by Arnaud Nicolai and G. van Kampen after drawings by P. van der Borcht. Hunt 101 (this copy); Nissen BBI 514; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 1486; Voet 1097. Provenance : English plant names added throughout in an eighteenth-century hand, with English index on last blank page -- F.
