DONATI, Marcello (1538-1602). De medica historia mirabili, libri sex . Mantua: Francisco Osana, 1586. 4 o (204 x 145 mm). (Small marginal patch on title, some browning.) Eighteenth-century cloth-backed boards (joints cracked). Provenance : some early marginalia. FIRST EDITION CONTAINING THE FIRST RECORDED CASE OF GASTRIC ULCER, and also the first description of angioneurotic oedema (Quncke's oedema). Garrison-Morton also cites the work as the second history of medicine of any importance after Champier's of 1506. Long points out that Donati includes "the first good pathologic-anatomical description of carcinoma of the rectum." After studying medicine at Pauda, Donati established himself as a member of the Accademia dell'Invaghiti, founded in 1562 by Crown Prince Cesare Gonzaga. Donati so impressed the prince that he conferred on him the title of count and eventually appointed him secretary of state.
