Garrison-Morton also cites the work as the second history of medicine of any importance after Champier's of 1506. Long points out that Donati includes "the first good pathologic-anatomical description of carcinoma of the rectum." After studying medicine at Pauda, Donati established himself as a member of the Accademia dell'Invaghiti, founded in 1562 by Crown Prince Cesare Gonzaga. Donati so impressed the prince that he conferred on him the title of count and eventually appointed him secretary of state.
