DONATUS, Aelius. Ars Minor . Ulm: Conrad Dinckmut, ca 1476-80.
DONATUS, Aelius. Ars Minor . Ulm: Conrad Dinckmut, ca 1476-80. Single leaf, 318 x 196 mm. 16 lines, including 4-line colophon. (Used as binder's waste, some reinforcements along edges.) Provenance : purchased from Emil Offenbecher, 26 August 1952. VERY RARE LEAF FROM CONRAD DINCKMUT'S BLOCKBOOK EDITION OF DONATUS'S LATIN GRAMMAR, the only signed blockbook. Dinckmut's blockbook edition comprised 26 leaves (last printed on recto only), 27 lines to the page (except the final page, which has 12 lines of text and 4 lines of colophon). Six leaves are known, in various copies. The edition must be dated c. 1476-80, but impressions may have been pulled until 1487 when Dinckmut produced a typographical edition of this text (GW 8864). The Stuttgart fragment is on paper with three-hillocks watermark, for which use is known from 1481 to 1483. The edition was apparently printed in formes, not page-by-page. All extant fragments belong to the same edition and Dinckmut presumably only did one blockbook edition before his typographical edition superseded it. According to RLG, the only recorded leaves located from this edition are: British Isles: Oxford, Bodley (2: 1 leaf, and fragment); United States: Princeton (bifolium with colophon); Germany: Metten Benedikt Abtei (double-leaf 1/8 and leaf 8) and Ulm StB (2 leaves only). See Peter Amelung, Der Fruehdruck im deutschen Suedwesten 1473-1500 (Stuttgart 1981) no. 88. GW VII, col. 620; Schreiber Handbuch VI, p. 56, nos. 2994 and 2995; Schramm VI, 1-2; K. Ernst & C. von Heusinger, Die Wiegendrucke des Kestner-Museums (Hannover 1963) p. 94, no. 3.
