Foochow: Rozario, Marcal and company, 1872 FIRST EDITION, 3 parts in 2 volumes, 4to (223 x 174mm.), English and Chinese text, errata leaves at end of each volume (2pp. + 7pp.), contemporary black half calf, black cloth boards, flat spines titled in gilt, preserved in a modern cloth box, without final blank at end of volume 1, covers detached or becoming so, slightly worn AN IMPORTANT AND SCARCE ENGLISH-CHINESE DICTIONARY AND HANDBOOK. THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED AT THIS PRESS IN FOOCHOW. INCLUDING LISTS OF PHOTOGRAPHIC TERMS IN ENGLISH AND CHINESE compiled and contributed by John Thomson, and Dr John Dudgeon. The English-Chinese vocabulary is followed by a section of terms and phrases contributed by residents, consular officials, missionaries and other residents in China, notable among which are two sections useful for photographers working in China, comprising an English-Chinese vocabulary of 'Photographical Chemicals and Apparatus' by John Thomson (volume 2, pp.319-320) and 'Photographic Terms' by Dr John Dudgeon (volume 2, pp.518-522), who also supplied lists of 'Medical divinities' and 'Shop signs and Street names at Peking'. Among the other contributors is E.C. Bowra of the Chinese Maritime Custom Service who supplied an index of plants with their names in Chinese and Latin. Other lists cover scientific, technical, medical and engineering terms, Buddhist words and phrases, geography, words for printers, custom house terms, proverbs, music, astronomy, medicine, Chinese chronology, and terms used in diplomatic and official correspondence.
